Egg-laying Vs. Live-bearing
The first thing you must do after you decide you want to breed chameleons is to determine if
the chameleons you have, or want to breed, are egg-laying or live-bearing. These two traits
have different drawbacks and benefits that may sway your decision. Live-bearing species are
easier to get babies from because the babies are "incubated" inside the mother, and are birthed
when ready. This eliminates having to incubate eggs at the proper temperature so they do not go
bad and die off. However, there is one downfall. The gestation is so long that you may only get
one litter of babies a year, but with eggs you can have as many as seven clutches a year laid.
Some popular live-bearing species are Jackson's (chamaeleo jacksonii), Flapjack (chamaeleo fuelleborni),
and Rudis Chameleons (chamaeleo rudis), and some popular egg-laying species are Panther (chamaeleo pardalis),
Fischer's (chamaeleo fischerii), Veiled (chamaeleo calyptratus), and Four-Horned Chameleons
(chamaeleo quadricornis).
