Overview and Prevention
There are several diseases or ailments that chameleons are prone to becoming afflicted with. The most common
include intestinal parasites, tongue injuries, dehydration, upper respiratory infections, eye infections, mouth
rot (stomatitis), and edema. Other less common ailments include egg binding, metabolic bone disease, skin
tourniquets, and some less common internal parasites. There are also numerous ways to avoid having your chameleon
contract the ailments listed above. These include adequate cleaning/disinfecting measures, quarantining new
arrivals, and basic knowledge of symptoms for both early treatment and avoiding purchasing already sick animals.
Cleaning – Cleaning out your chameleon’s enclosure is one of the best ways of avoiding sickness. An enclosure
that is not cleaned for a prolonged period of time can become highly infectious due to bacteria and possible
