When you get your new chameleon try a few different methods of feeding. Some chameleons have adapted a trait to bowl feed. Others will eat right out of your hand and some will not do either. All chameleons should have a diverse diet, but the main staple for a chameleon's diet should be crickets. Once a week you should change your chameleon's diet. If you have been feeding it crickets, feed it meal worms for one day out of the week. One of our Diego Suarez Panther Chameleons (Chamaeleo pardalis) stops eating crickets and will only eat mealworms for a short period of time, then it will go back to eating crickets. Also, along with a staple of crickets and mealworms, feed your chameleon an occasional insect from outside. We sometimes feed our chameleons locusts, praying mantis', cockroaches, sow bugs, moths, fruit flies, and snails. If you do feed your chameleon wild-caught insects, you must make sure they come from an area that is free of pesticides. Insects can grow immune to them, but a chameleon that eats an insect full of toxins may become very ill. Mineral supplementation is a very important aspect of a chameleons health.
