Scientific Names And Classifications
The species in the Bradypodian genus are similar
to the Chamaeleo genus, but are much smaller, only growing from 2-6 inches in total length. Also, these species
are exclusively live bearing. Males of this genus tend to be very colorful.
The Brookesia and Rhampholean species are known as dwarf leaf, or stump-tailed chameleons. They live most of their
lives on the leaf litter of the forest floor. They will sometimes venture onto plants or sticks, but will still
remain close to the ground. Their tails have limited uses, and they cannot be used the way Chamaeleo species use
their tails. The coloration of these species is such that they blend in with the leaf litter below them. Therefore,
it is rare that they are any colors but gray, brown, black, or other colors that resemble dead leaves.
Different species are put into a specific genuses based upon several factors, such as size, distribution, and
reproduction methods (oviparous or ovoviviparous).
