General Nav Habitat and Distribution

Southern Spain is also home to a limited number of chameleons, in particular Chamaeleo chameleon, which is also found in parts of northern Africa. The Zebra Chameleon, Chamaeleo zeylanicus is found on certain parts of India and Sri Lanka. The Seychelles, a small island chain in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar, is home to the Tiger Chameleon, Calumma tigris.

Chameleons may hibernate or aestivate in times of extreme cold or heat. In these conditions, chameleons slow their body down and wait for the temperature to warm up or for the rainy season to come. This is an extremely powerful adaptation that some chameleons have evolved that allow them to surivive in times of extreme hardship. Some species, such as Parson's Chameleon, have been known to dig burrows in the ground and remain their for many months until the weather becomes less severe.
