Two-Horned Mountain Chameleon
(chamaeleo montium)
The Two-Horned Mountain Chameleon, or the Montium Chameleon, is native to the mountains
of Cameroon. Like the Four-Horned Chameleon, they require cool temperatures from 55°F at
night to 75°F during the daytime with 100 percent humidity, and should not be exposed to
temperatures above 85°F. They can also survive winter temperatures that dip into the low
30's. The male of the species are adorned with two long horns protruding from the front of
their snouts, and have a sailfin that runs all the way down their back and part of their
tail. The females lack these two characteristics, and also have differing colors. Males
can have a bright green base color with blue and yellow hues throughout their bodies, while
the females are basically green with red "streaks" throughout their body. The females
can attain dull reds throughout their bodies if they are gravid or threatened. Females
will lay between 5 and 15 eggs a few times a year, which hatch after a short gestation
period of about 4 to 5 months.
