Species Nav Giant Spiny Chameleon
(chamaeleo verrucosus)

The Verrucosus Chameleon, also known as the Warty Chameleon or the Madagascar Giant Spiny Chameleon, is one of the largest species of Madagascar Chameleons, often growing up to 2 feet in length in the wild. They have a wide array of colors, ranging from turqoise, bright red, blue, green, and yellow throughout their bodies. They live in the hot and dry thorn forests of Madagascar that often goes many months without rain. Green leaves are often missing from all trees during these months. For this reason, these chameleons should be kept warmer and drier than most other species of chameleons. They can easily tolerate temperatures up to and exceeding 100° as well as cold nightime temperatures in the 40's and 50's. Females lay 30-60 eggs per clutch after a 1-2 month gestation, only once or maybe twice a year. Eggs take quite a while to hatch, from 8-12 months, and can be incubated at slightly warmer conditions. Although adult Verrucosus Chameleons are very large, babies hatch out at a relatively small size.
